Modern Technology To Aid In Return Of Stolen Torahs

Brooklyn, NY - The five sifrei Torah, valued at approximately $250000, stolen from the Karlsburg Shul in Borough Park yesterday, were registered with ID Scroll, a registration program which makes it easier to identify and retrieve lost or stolen sifrei Torahs. VIN News spoke with Rabbi Dovid Greenfield and Rabbi Shmuel Traube of ID Scroll in Boro Park, who explained how their system, which is approved by law enforcement agencies and the FBI, helps retrieve missing sifrei Torah. The ID Scroll registry, created by Vaad Mishmeres STaM in 1993, uses sophisticated technology to provide a unique fingerprint for every Torah that is scanned into its database by analyzing the distinct way the words are written. No two Torahs, even written by the same sofer, will ever be written in exactly the same way and it is these distinctive patterns that make each Torah in ID Scrolls registry easily identifiable. Each Torah receives a unique identification with a reference code which can provide proof of ownership if anyone ever tries to resell that Torah. To date, over 250000 sifrei Torah have been registered in ID Scrolls database. |

Sefer Torah Stolen In Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ - A Sefer Torah and several other religious items were stolen from a Phoenix Shul and police are asking for the public's help to find the thieves. Police said the theft took place at Young Israel Synagogue of Phoenix located near Seventh Street and Maryland Avenue. The Sefer Torah was the most significant item stolen. Members of the Shul realized a Torah had been stolen when they arrived for Davening on Monday morning and found a vacant space within the Aron Kodesh. The Shul door had been broken open. "It's emotionally devastating to the community," Rabbi Reuven Mann said. "The Torah became a part of our lives and our soul." Mann said the stolen Torah is valued at around $35000 but carries a much higher spiritual value. "They are treated with tremendous reverence, passed on from generation to generation," he said. Police said they have no leads and do not yet have a motive in this crime. (Source: KTVK) |
