Thus, a volunteer civil guard was established (1974) to maintain neighborhood security units, including command centers, armed patrols and training programs. |

Archeologists Claim to Find King David's City: Chirbet Kaiyahafa Could Be from Israelite Kingdom

Chirbet Kaiyahafa is one of the most hotly debated archeology sites today... Just 20 miles from Jerusalem, the ancient city ruins sit on a hill overlooking the Elah valley where the bible says the Israelites encamped when David slew the giant Goliath... Burned olive pits put through carbon 14 dating tests at Oxford University show this city is more than 3000 years old...it stood from approximately 1020 BCE to 980 BCE. Professor Yossi Garfinkel is the lead archeologist at Chirbet Kaiyafah, where he began excavating in the summer of 2007. He believes he's uncovered a walled Judaen city that was part of the kingdom ruled from Jerusalem by the biblical King David. It corresponds, Garfinkel says, with the city the bible calls She'aryiim. There are a number of clues that lead Garfinkel to believe Judaens from the Israelite kingdom lived here, not Cannanites and not Philistines. A pottery shard was discovered with what Garfinkel and others argue is the earliest Hebrew inscription... Garfinkel says there's another compelling reason to believe the people that lived here were Judaean. After years of excavations, not one pig bone has ever been recovered, leading him to believe that whoever lived her observed the biblical ban on eating pork. That was very typical of Judaean and Israelite settlements. For comparison, 20% of the bones excavated in neighboring Philistine cities were pig. No graven images and no animal or human figurines were found in the site's cultic or worhip rooms <b>...</b> |

On the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, Israel celebrates 'Jerusalem day', the national holiday commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the 1967 liberation of the old city from Jordanian control. Jerusalem is Israel's capital and largest city, serving as a spiritual center for all of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. King David turned the city into the capital for the Jewish nation, following by his son King Solomon building the first Jewish temple. During prayer, Jews face east towards the direction of Jerusalem. The city is also featured in Israel's national anthem as the heart of where Jews long to be as a free people. However, along with the religious associations attributed to Jerusalem, the city serves as a modern, cultural, historical and tourist attraction for both Israelis and tourists from around the world. Jerusalem Day is celebrated with ceremonies and memorial services and celebrations take place across the country. However, some Israelis feel Jerusalem has taken a turn in its development, which they see as a negative one. According to preliminary reports, there are many people trapped inside a burning structure. 19:38: The fire is on Salant Street in Meah Shearim. MDA is treating at least 10 people, apparently in light condition. The blaze appears to have erupted in a machsan (storage area). According to EMS personnel on the scene, there are many people trapped in the burning building. 19:43: The blaze is still out of control and it appears that there may be as many as 20 people trapped inside according to Ichud Hatzalah and other EMS personnel operating on the scene. MDA is treating people for smoke inhalation. Fire and rescue personnel are having a difficult time accessing the building due to the small streets and logistical realities as many vehicles and emergency personnel continue working to extricate trapped individuals. 19:45: The structure has a number of entrances. It is unclear if any or all of the entrances are blocked. Ladders are in place, apparently as firefighters work to extricate people trapped in the building. Zaka reports victims are being treated for smoke inhalation. 20:01: Update from Ichud Hatzalah: The fire erupted in a building on Salant Street opposite Yeshivas Slonim in Meah Shearim.
