Temple Beth Tikvah - A Reformed Jewish Synagogue in Houston

For more info about the temple and events, click here: www.templebethtikvah.org Shalom and welcome to Temple Beth Tikvah. Come spend an evening with us on Shabbat or join us for a special event. We are proud of building a spiritual presence for the Jewish community here in Clear Lake Texas. Representing young and older families alike, we invite you to share that sense of belonging. The story has been told many times, how two families sat around a kitchen table in February 1994 to start a Clear Lake area Reform Jewish congregation. Welcoming interfaith families, we are creating a home of learning and righteous deeds, good deeds that will enable us to thrive in the presence of the Almighty. Our continued growth is due to the loyal support of a congregation committed to contributing their energy and resources to our Temple family and the warm guidance of strong spiritual leadership. Temple Beth Tikvah is located at 12411 Park Shadows Trail Houston, Texas in the Clear Lake area near Bay Area Blvd. For more information, go to www.templebethtikvah.org or call 281-286-1717

Isaac Namdar, MD - A Community at the Crossroads of Religion and Homosexuality

Video recording of Dr. Isaac Namdar, Dr. David Silverstein, and Rabbi Lisa Edwards in a book reading and discussion of the book "In This Day and Age?!: A Community at the Crossroads of Religion and Homosexuality". Dr. Namdar is the invited guest speaker of Beth Chayim Chadashim Synagogue, the oldest LGBT synagogue in the world. A brief book reading of select paragraphs is followed by an open discussion forum of the themes in Dr. Namdar's book about his interactions with his Sephardic community and his eventual excommunication after he was outed by a fellow congregation member to his ancestral community. The event is moderated by Dr. David Silverstein, an original cast member of "Trembling Before Gd", considered to be the groundbreaking movie showcasing the struggles of gays and lesbians in religious Orthodox communities. Dr. Namdar has given previous similar talks to members of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, the largest LGBT synagogue in the world located in New York City, as well as to Jewish Queer Youth organization in the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan. Both events were standing room only. Dr. Namdar has also spoken in the LGBT Community Center of New York City during their Marriage Equality forum week that paved the way to bring marriage equality to New York State.

Religious School Passover Program 2012

Temple Beth Hillel Religious School partnered with Jewish World Watch to create a fun, interactive and educational Passover program for our 4th- through 7th-grade students entitled, "Is Your Cell Phone Kosher?" The first part of the video was shown to the students before the program to educate them about what is going on in Congo. People are kept in slavery to mine the minerals that we use for all of our electronics—computers, cell phones, etc. We related the story of the slaves in Congo to our experiences of slavery in Egypt. We discussed things we could do to help the people of Congo. The students were then given paper cell phones with an "App Store." The students went to different stations, participating in activities related to the theme. At the end of each station, students "downloaded an app" (got a sticker) to put on their phone. Watch this video to see what is going on in Congo and the great experiences our students had learning about and helping the people of Congo!
