Ambassador Daniel Shapiro Paints Haifa Red, White and Blue.

Mayor Yahav welcomed Ambassador Shapiro to a full-day's visit to Haifa, briefing him on his city's impressive projects, which are turning Israel's largest northern city into a leader in transportation, culture, and high-tech. Following a visit to American-Israeli high-tech leader GE Healthcare, the Ambassador visited MadaTech, Israel's National Museum of Science, Technology & Space, where he met school children enjoying the newly inaugurated Noble Energy Science Park, and even tried some of the rides himself. At the University of Haifa, President Aaron Ben-Ze'ev and the Student's Union organized the first-ever "American Day." The highlight of the university visit was Ambassador Shapiro's Town Hall meeting on "US -- Israel Relations and Regional Issues in a Changing World," where the students questioned him at length. Mayor Yahav closed out the eventful day at Beit Hagefen Arab-Jewish Cultural Center, where the Ambassador met with religious leaders representing the Christian and Muslim Arab, Jewish, Druze, and Baha'i faiths, who credited Haifa municipality's active support for dialogue and cooperation among the different religious groups with Haifa's success as a mixed city. |

Magen - Protecting our Children - Abuse Survivor Testimony

Magen: A Note of Warning This video contains disturbing and powerful material. This video was filmed at Magen's 2nd Annual Awareness Evening, on 19th January, 2012, in Ramat Beit Shemesh. "Magen" is a Child Protection Agency in Beit Shemesh, Israel. The video shows Eugene Weisberg, a local resident, reading a speech by an anonymous survivor of child abuse, who we call "S". The condition that "S" made, in order to write and for Magen to present his story at the event, was that every word would be his own, with nothing changed, edited or omitted. Sexual abuse thrives in an environment of silence and secrecy, and we are honored to break that silence by giving this public voice to "S". One of the many disturbing elements of "S"'s story is the attempt of various rabbanim to cover up the abuse that occurred- in the forms of intimidation, bribery, and perjury. To our great distress, S's story is not unique in this regard. This presentation was an opportunity for a survivor to share his personal experience, feelings and opinions on abuse. Magen in NO WAY wishes to imply that all, or even most, rabbanim participate in "covering up" child abuse. Our experience has been that there are many, many rabbanim who are educated about the issue of sexual abuse and work bravely and tirelessly to protect children. Planting an olive tree near Bethlehem

Run Across Palestine coordinators Vivien Sansour and Timothy Young plant an olive tree in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, in the West Bank. Olive trees are the primary means of subsistence for Palestinian farmers. Forty-five percent of the agricultural land in the West Bank is used to grow olives, employing 100000 Palestinians. It takes an olive sapling like this one 15 years to reach maturity, so Timothy and Vivien's act was an investment for the future. The Run Across Palestine will traverse 129 miles in five days from the south to the north of the West Bank. The project of On the Ground begins on Saturday. Follow it at RunAcrossPalestine.org. |

They also started three-dimensional scanning of many of the underground chambers, tombs and tunnels, using a leading-edge scanning technology capable of capturing millions of surveyed points in a matter of minutes. Future groups of students will continue the surveying work, design a visitors' center for the site and produce a movie for tourists that describes the site's archaeological history and excavation progress. |
