Matt's D'var Torah: Toldot

D'var Torah from Matt's Bar Mitzvah for Torah portion Toldot. Here's a transcript: This week's Torah portion tells the story of Jacob and Esau. While there's SO much from this portion that I could talk about, what caught my attention was that Isaac told his son, Jacob, to marry someone from the same tribe. You see, Isaac had an obligation to pass down Abraham's covenant through his sons, and at this point, Esau had already married two women outside the tribe. This got me thinking a little. I wondered whether Jacob ended up marrying within the tribe just because his father TOLD him to — or whether Jacob himself felt that he had been leading such a Jewish life that he WANTED to marry someone with similar beliefs and traditions. Honestly, I don't think it's enough for our parents just to tell us to marry within our religion; I think our desire to pass down the covenant has to be something we feel in our soul. And to feel it in our soul, we have to be raised Jewishly. That means more than just having a Jewish name, eating Jewish foods, and showing up at temple once a year. It MEANS incorporating Judaism into your family and into your life. Things like: • going to Hebrew school and learning prayers • understanding and celebrating Jewish holidays • singing Jewish songs • learning about Jewish milestones • talking about Jewish values in your family • connecting with your relatives and ancestors through Jewish customs and traditions and... • going to Jewish summer camp (SHOUT-OUT <b>...</b>

The Bar Mitz

The Bar Mitz Bar Mitzvah (Hebrew: בר מצוה‎) (Yiddish: בר מיצוואַ) and Bat Mitzvah (Hebrew: בת מצוה‎) ({{Lang-yi|'מיצוואַ' בת are Jewish coming of age rituals. According to Jewish law, when Jewish children reach 13 or 12 years of age, they become responsible for their actions, and "become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, plural B'nai Mitzvah" (English: Son (Bar) or Daughter (Bat) of commandment, plural Children of commandment). The Bar Mitzvah ceremony involves the young man or woman being called to read the Torah, a Haftarah portion, or both at a Shabbat or other service (Thursday morning, Monday morning or a festival) when the Torah is read, and it may also involve giving a d'var Torah (a discussion of some Torah issue). In many communities the rabbi or other community leader blesses the celebrant and a certificate is given. In Orthodox congregations a Bat Mitzvah ceremony will not include the Bat Mitzvah girl leading religious services, as women are ineligible to lead communal religious services in the Orthodox tradition. Some progressive Orthodox congregations do allow women, including Bat Mitzvah girls, to read Torah or lead prayers at women-only prayer groups. Precisely what the Bar/Bat Mitzvah may do during the service varies in Judaism's different denominations and can also depend on the specific practices of various congregations. In many congregations, the years leading up to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration are spent preparing for the event. Many congregations require <b>...</b>

STUDYING WITH THE RABBI - As Little Children

Our children come to the Beit Knesset each day to study with the rabbi. Synch: From around the age of five we would study with the Rabbi until the age of Bar-Mitzvah, the girls would study with us, but they would study only until the age of ten and afterwards they would go and spend some time at home, a couple of years until they get married usually. Our learned Rabbi teaches them not just how to read the Torah, but also how to walk in its ways -- to love God and their fellow man. Yeshua called for the little children to be brought to him. And he taught us that we too need to be as little children to gain entry to the kingdom of heaven.

THE BAR MITZVAH - About My Father's Business

biblelandshop.net One, very special occasion that takes place in the Beit Knesset is the Bar Mitzvah of our sons. In this rite of passage, a boy is called to read from the Torah before the community for the first time. Synch: The Bar-Mitzvah was a very, very special thing because at that moment, you actually become a grown up, and when you become grown up in our culture, it means you're going to face all the community, you will be able for the first time to read the Torah, in front of all the people in the synagogue which is a very, very important and responsible thing. You don't want to mess up. Your parents are sitting over there and they are listening and you need to do it in a very good way so that they have the honor and of course, the honor that you have in front of God. From this point on, the young adult can now join with other men as an equal, to discuss Torah Law. Many believe that it was this kind of debate that young Jesus was having with the teachers, when Mary and Joseph found him in the Temple, impressing them with his wisdom -- despite his tender age.
