Every day, without fail, I learn a portion from these books. Rashi lived at the end of the 11th century (died 1105) and is still the most popular commentator in Jewish history. He explains the simple meaning of the Torah. Hidden in his words are references to deeper and esoteric meanings. At the time he was writing his commentary it was the custom of the Catholic monks to compete to have the most innovative translations of the Bible. Although I understand the Hebrew fluently I use this edition because it has translations of the middle French that Rashi sometimes used. However, this is the first time in 900 years that this most important explanation of the Five Books of Moses is available to people who are not fluent in Hebrew in a reliable and comprehensive format.
(Next to these books is a commentary by Nachmanodies who sometimes disagreed with Rashi since he explained on a non-literal level and delved often into an exclusively esoteric explanation.)
5/365ish: Thankful and blessed. There is one man who is responsible for teaching me my philosophy of life, how to view people and circumstance, and what constitutes a moral life. Today is the anniversary of the day he assumed a position of leadership in 1951 that enabled him to reach and influence thousands of people, Jews and non-Jews. He held that position till his passing in 2007, but continues to have influence throughout the world.
